Irish Moss is harvested each summer from submerged rocks lining the coast of Ireland. As a mineral rich algae, Irish Moss is high in iodine, which may help bring balance to thyroid issues. It is also used to relieve both respiratory and digestive issues. Use with caution, however, since Irish Moss should only be used therapeutically for short increments of time.
Outside the home remedy cabinet, Irish Moss also has a place in the pantry as a thickening agent. Those with certain digestive restrictions will love this plant version of a starch: no gluten, no dairy and approved for raw food dishes. The same “gelling” properties which make Irish Moss an excellent thickener also make it fabulous for the skin.
To prepare, simply soak in lukewarm water for up to 3 hours (or boil if short on time), rinse, and blend.
