Calcium. You know it’s a beneficial mineral – essential even. Maybe you’ve seen the jar of powdered calcium carbonate in our bulk herb and spice department, somewhere between ca and cardamom. But what on earth to do with the stuff?

You could take it internally, maybe mix it with water and drink as an antacid, but its most fun and practical use is as the main ingredient in DIY natural toothpaste. Calcium carbonate gently cleans and whitens tooth enamel naturally. It is also said to aid in “re-mineralizing” or reversing the effects of tooth decay while supporting healthy bones and enamel. Ingredients:

• 5 parts Calcium Carbonate

• 1 part Diatomaceous Earth

• 2 parts Baking Soda

• 3 parts Xylitol Powder (optional sweetener)

• Essential Oils for flavor (Try Veriditas Botanicals Essential Oils – GumDropps blend or Peppermint)

Directions:

Mix all powdered ingredients. Add coconut oil one part at a time until you get desired consistency. Add essential oils for flavor. Store in glass container. Spoon onto toothbrush and brush away!
