Frankincense is the hardened aromatic resin from within the Boswellia tree. When frankincense is harvested, the bark of the tree is sliced and the resin drips out and hardens. These hardened crystals are called “frankincense tears”.
This fragrance – described as deep, sweet, spicy and woodsy – is frequently used in natural personal care products and sold as an essential oil. But you may not be familiar with the health benefits associated with this warm aroma.
Frankincense tears are burned in spiritual ceremonies or sacred settings to create a reverent atmosphere. Perhaps the reason for this use is its effect on the mind. When burned, frankincense slows the breathing, calms the mind and helps to reduce anxiety. To burn, simply place tears on top of an incense charcoal in a heatproof container.
Tears may also be lightly crushed and added to boiling water for a steam treatment. Inhaling this vapor can soothe and clear the sinuses. You can also make your own scented body products by grinding frankincense tears to a powder with a mortar and pestle. Stir this powder into lotions, sprays, oils or body washes for an intoxicating and unique natural perfume.
